Centurion Tennis Girls Doubles Headed to State

The St. John Paul II High School Tennis Team participated in the TAPPS 4A District 4 Tennis Tournament at The Dominion in San Antonio last Friday.


In Girls Singles, Amy Ayala won her first round match against Holy Cross, 6-0, 6-0. In a nail-biter, she lost her quarterfinal match against the number 2 seed from SACS, in a third set battle (6-2,3-6,6-3).


In boys singles, David Apacible earned first place in Consolation, with 2 wins over players from Victoria St. Joseph.

In girls doubles, Veronica Fernandez and Theresia Hendricks placed 4th, with a 3-set win over San Antonio Christian.
Theresia and Veronica's first-round match score: 6-4,4-6,6-2 (their first 3 set win as a doubles team). With this win, Veronica and Theresia have earned an opportunity to compete in the TAPPS State Tennis Tournament in Waco, Texas.

alt Veronica Fernandez and Theresia Hendricks will be the first Centurion Doubles Team to compete at the State Tournament. They will now be linked with the well-respected names of Annalia Palacios, Shelby Hathorn, Daniel Apacible, and Steven Ballien who have all represented the Centurion Tennis Team at the State Tournament, but for singles competition.

Centurion Tennis Coach Jessica Trujillo noted, on Theresia and Veronica earning a State Tournament Bid, "I am so incredibly proud of these girls. They've worked very hard to improve everyday. These girls have put in extra time, doing more than I've asked, and now it has paid off."

Their first match at State will be played on Monday, April 11 at 1pm.
