St.JPII Seniors Erika Diaz and Alyssa Garcia declared their intentions Wednesday, on National Signing Day.
Erika Diaz(right) signed to play softball for NAIA Powerhouse Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. As a High School Freshman, Diaz was honored with an elections to 2nd Team All-District as a pitcher. She also made the All-Academic Team her freshman year. As a sophomore, she was voted to the All-District 1st Team as a pitcher, and also made the All-Academic Team. She was also voted to the All-South Texas Team as a Pitcher. As a Junior she made 1st Team All-District and 1st Team All-State as a pitcher.
Head Softball Coach Ray Heenan commented on Erika, "Erika is a joy to coach, always practicing and playing in the off-season. She comes to practice ready to contribute in any way possible. She could probably play any position on the field, but is invaluable to the team as a pitcher. She carried us to the Area Round where we lost 1-0 to the eventual State Champs. 3 D's describe Erika... Dedicated, Dependable, and Devastating on the mound. A great softball player but a better citizen. A great future awaits her. We as coaches will miss her."
Erika is the Daughter of Mike and Missy Diaz.
Alyssa Garciasigned her NLI to play softball for Division I Texas Southern University, where she received a scholarship. As a Freshman at St.JPII, Garcia was recognized with a 1st Team All-District selection, and 2nd Team All-State. She was also voted to the All-Tournament Teams in Port Lavaca and Seguin. She is an exceptional talent that represents the spirit of the school extremely well. We can always count on Alyssa to give us 110%. She will be missed after the 2016 season. I hope she continues to exhibit the team camaraderie that she brings to every practice. Every day she helps our underclass understand what it means to be a Centurion Softball Player and what is expected of them. Good luck and have a great college career."
