A part of Coach Steve Castro's legendary legacy was shared for a brief, but powerful moment with the students at St. John Paul II HS.
Before his time at St.JPII, Coach Castro spent 28 years building and maintaining the Baseball Powerhouse at Robstown High School. While there, he made it to the State Tournament five times and won Back to Back State Championships in 1991 and 1992. That was the first time a baseball team in our area accomplished that feat, until the St. John Paul II Baseball Team won Back to Back State Championships in 2011. Coincidentally, Coach Castro was a part of that team as well, serving as a hitting and infield coach for the Centurions.
Texas High School Baseball Hall of Famer Coach Steve Castro passed at his home yesterday from heart complications.
Athletic Director JJ Trujillo played against Coach Castro's Cottonpickers in the early 90's and later, served side-by-side with Castro as the Centurion's Pitching Coach. Coach Trujillo stated on social media, "Whether it was as a competitor or a fellow coach, I feel blessed for every second I shared the diamond with you Coach Steve Castro. You are a true legend and a great baseball man. Thank you for all you did for our young people in South Texas." He continued, "Thank you for your wisdom Coach. I, with many others, will do my best to carry part of your legacy for years to come. Rest in Peace Coach."
